Back-to-School, Back to Better Posture

It may still feel like summer, but back-to-school season is right around the corner. Before the backpacks are packed and school routines officially begin, now is a great time to start thinking about how your child’s body will handle the transition back to school.

A typical school day can put a surprising amount of stress on a growing body. Kids may spend hours sitting at a desk, looking down at books or tablets, carrying a backpack, and then coming home to more homework and screen time. Add sports, after-school activities, and the normal bumps and falls that come with being a kid, and their bodies can have a lot to keep up with.

One of the easiest places to start is with your child’s backpack. A backpack that is too heavy, poorly fitted, or carried on one shoulder can affect how a child stands and moves. Before school starts, clean out all those forgotten papers, toys, and random treasures from last year and make sure your child is only carrying what they actually need. Both shoulder straps should be used, and the backpack should fit comfortably rather than hanging too low.

Then there’s sitting. Kids spend a large portion of their school day at a desk, and that doesn't necessarily stop when they get home. Homework, gaming, phones, and tablets can add even more time spent in one position. Encouraging kids to get up, move around, stretch, or change positions throughout the day can help break up those long periods of sitting.

It’s also worth taking a look at your child’s homework setup before school begins. A chair that provides support and a workspace that allows them to sit comfortably can make homework time easier on their neck and back. If your child is constantly leaning forward, hunching over, or craning their neck to see a screen, it may be time to adjust their setup.

And, of course, kids need to move. Between school, homework, and technology, it can be easy for physical activity to get pushed aside. Encourage your child to get outside, play with friends, participate in sports, ride their bike, swim, or simply move around. It doesn't have to be complicated. Regular movement is an important part of keeping a growing body strong and mobile.

Back-to-school is also a good time to pay attention to how your child is feeling. Occasional soreness after a busy day or activity can happen, but recurring complaints of neck, back, or joint discomfort shouldn't simply be brushed off as part of growing up. Changes in posture, movement, or activity levels can sometimes provide important clues about how your child’s body is handling their daily routine.

Chiropractic care can be one part of supporting your child's musculoskeletal health. A chiropractor can evaluate posture, movement, and areas of discomfort and help determine whether care may be appropriate for your child. For kids who participate in sports, this can also be a helpful time to check in before practices and games become part of the weekly routine again.

You don't have to wait until the first day of school to start preparing. Getting backpacks ready, setting up a comfortable homework space, encouraging movement, and creating healthy routines now can help make the transition back to school a little smoother.

So while you're shopping for school supplies and trying to remember where you put last

year's lunchbox, don't forget about the most important thing your child brings to school every day: their body.

A new school year means new routines, new activities, and plenty of opportunities to grow. Let's help them start it feeling strong, supported, and ready to take on the year.
