Inflammation: Your Body’s Signal

2 min read

When you hear the word inflammation, you might immediately think of something negative. But inflammation is actually a normal and important part of how your body responds to stress, injury, and other challenges. The goal isn’t to eliminate inflammation. It’s to understand why it happens and how your body manages the response.

So, What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is part of the body’s natural defense and repair process. When your body detects a problem, it responds by sending resources to the area that needs attention. This can help support healing and recovery. The problem can arise when the body is continually exposed to stressors without enough time or resources to recover. Instead of a short-term response that resolves when it is no longer needed, the body may remain under a greater inflammatory burden.

Stress and Your Body’s Ability to Recover

Inflammation doesn’t happen in isolation. Sleep, physical activity, nutrition, stress, and other aspects of daily life can all play a role in how your body responds and recovers. This is where the idea of allostatic load comes into the conversation. Allostatic load refers to the cumulative burden that repeated or prolonged stress can place on the body over time. When your body is constantly being asked to adapt without adequate recovery, it can become harder to maintain balance.

Inflammation Isn’t the Enemy

The goal isn’t to stop your body from having an inflammatory response. Your body needs that response when appropriate. Instead, the focus should be on supporting the systems that help your body respond appropriately and return to a state of recovery. That means looking at the bigger picture: Are you getting enough quality sleep? Are you moving regularly? Are you managing the stressors in your life? Are you giving your body the nutrients and recovery it needs?

Small, consistent habits can play an important role in supporting overall health and resilience.
