Movement May at Columbia Family Chiropractic

At Columbia Family Chiropractic, we spend a lot of time helping people get rid of pain. But if we’re being honest, pain is usually the last signal the body gives that something isn’t working well.

Long before that, there are smaller signs. Stiffness when you wake up. Tight shoulders by the end of the day. Feeling like your body just doesn’t move the way it used to. Most of it gets brushed off as normal, but a lot of it comes down to one simple thing: how we move.

That’s really where the idea for Movement May came from.

We wanted to create something that goes beyond adjustments and appointments. Something that gives people a chance to actually experience better movement, not just talk about it. Because once you feel the difference, it clicks in a way that explanations alone never quite do.

Throughout the month, we’re opening up the clinic for a series of free classes led by local professionals who each bring a different perspective on movement.

Pilates, for example, is one of those things people often associate with core workouts, but it’s much more than that. It teaches control, stability, and awareness. A lot of people are surprised at how challenging it is in a completely different way than what they’re used to, and how quickly they notice improvements in posture and strength.

Functional movement takes a different approach. Instead of focusing on isolated exercises, it looks at how your body works as a whole. How you bend, reach, twist, and carry yourself throughout the day. These are the patterns that, when done poorly or repetitively, tend to lead to discomfort over time. Learning how to move more efficiently in those everyday moments can make a bigger impact than people expect.

Yoga adds another layer to the conversation. It brings in flexibility, balance, and breathing, but also something people don’t always prioritize, which is slowing down. A lot of tension we carry isn’t just physical. Creating space for your body to reset, even briefly, can change how you feel both mentally and physically.

What ties all of this together is the idea that movement doesn’t have to be extreme to be effective. It just has to be intentional.

Movement May isn’t about pushing

yourself to the limit or trying to become a completely different version of yourself in 30 days. It’s about paying attention. Noticing where your body feels restricted, where it feels strong, and where it might need a little more support.

For some people, that might mean discovering a new way to exercise. For others, it might just be realizing that small changes in posture or daily habits can relieve discomfort they’ve been dealing with for years.

Either way, the goal is the same: to help you feel more comfortable and confident in your own body.
